Charles Darwin Reserve – Field Training

Our resident fauna expert spent a week up at Charles Darwin Reserve recently, as part of a field training program organised by ECU. The course – Techniques in Wildlife Conservation was aimed at participants looking to gain extra skills in fauna survey techniques and handling native animals. The course included a theory component with field work to complement including techniques in cage trapping, ellip trapping, spotlighting, data analysis, surveying techniques for birds, reptiles and frogs. Charles Darwin Reserve is located north-east of Perth, on the northern edge of the Western Australian Wheat Belt, largely within the Southwest Botanical Province, Australia’s only internationally recognised biodiversity ‘hotspot’.

The theory and practical skills gained during this course will assist Natural Area with undertaking local fauna surveys.
