Natural Area undertakes reconnaissance, targeted and detailed flora surveys in accordance with regulatory standards. Surveys cover native and non-native species identification, vegetation type assessment, vegetation condition mapping, identification of priority and threatened flora as well as conducting declared rare flora (DRF). We have conducted flora and vegetation surveys across many bioregions of Western Australia.
A reconnaissance survey serves to gather initial, broad information of the survey area, providing context and verifying desktop findings. They are typically conducted when flora and vegetation values are well defined and potential impacts are not expected to be significant. Reconnaissance surveys involve a site visit by one of our experienced botanists who undertakes low-intensity sampling to describe general vegetation characteristics and assess condition.
A targeted survey gathers detailed information on significant flora and/or vegetation. These surveys involve one or more site visits to accurately assess size, distribution and ecological context of these populations or communities. Surveys are timed to coincide with periods when the target species are most identifiable, such as during flowering.
Detailed surveys thoroughly characterise local and regional ecological context relative to the survey area’s flora and vegetation values. This type of survey is essential for when a desktop survey identifies high diversity of flora or vegetation, unique landforms or vegetation units, significant flora or vegetation or when potential impacts from a proposal are expected to be significant. Detailed surveys require multiple sampling events, be optimally timed and require comprehensive survey design.
Natural Area can assist with all aspects of flora surveying, mapping and reporting. Our team of professionals are experienced with native and non-native WA flora species.
