Weed Mapping

Weed Survey & Assessments

Natural Area’s highly experienced Environmental Scientists and field personnel undertake comprehensive weed mapping across the bioregions of Western Australia. Our qualitative and quantitative approach to weed mapping utilising both on-ground and GIS techniques, illustrates species location, type and density as well as broad spatial characteristics to assist with the identification and management of all weed types.

  • Survey Methods

An initial desktop assessment will be conducted to assist with weed surveys and identification of invasive or WoNS within the survey area. On-ground survey methods for weeds are adapted from EPA Technical Guidance 2016 ‘Flora and Vegetation Surveys for Environmental Impact Assessment’. Survey sites are traversed on foot where metadata for each weed species present is recorded on a tablet PC with the location captured using high-accuracy GPS. Points are used to denote individual plants with spatial analyses techniques conducted on the data sets to display broad characteristics of weed density and distribution. This data can be used to monitor weed progression or weed control effectiveness across numerous surveys.

  • Data Collection & Reporting

Data relating to weed species is recorded in relation to methods outlines in the Department of Environment and Conservations ‘Techniques for mapping weed distribution and cover in bushland and wetlands’. Attributes obtained in weed surveys include the position of each weed using high-accuracy GPS, Genus, species and common name, cover and density. Data obtained will be analysed and synthesised in a report containing survey findings, geo-referenced maps of weed density, distribution, species and location as well as recommended actions for weed control including treatment type and timing
